The US has work to do to get ahead in biotech and AI - and building a safe and resilient innovation ecosystem will also require us to balance advances with safeguards. Glad for the opportunity to put together a starting point in my new report for CSET, below!⬇️

Excited to share that my (first sole-authored!) op-ed just came out for The Hill! In it, I argue that Washington’s science cuts are a gift to Beijing. The US innovation advantage is diminishing. A 🧵 putting these cuts in context RE: US-PRC competition. viz: Kyle Chan 1/12

My latest in Defense One: The U.S. failure to contain measles isn't just a public health issue—it's a national security risk. Here's why our biodefense posture begins with signaling the strength of our public health infrastructure: defenseone.com/ideas/2025/04/…

The White House just paused ALL visa interviews for foreign students. A disaster for longterm US competitiveness in emerging techs. Five months in, and the damage is adding up. A detailed account of the disruptions to US science, by month. 🧵 /40

Jessica Ji/Vikram Venkatram/Steph Batalis, PhD do a great job explaining AI safety evals here. I found the distinction between model safety vs contextual safety useful: We have to evaluate both model capabilities + how models can be used in the real world.

"Red-teaming" isn't a catch-all term (or method!) to evaluate AI safety. So, what else do we have in the toolbox? In our recent blog post, we explore the different questions we can ask about safety, how we can start to measure them, and what it means for AIxBio. Check it out! ⬇️
