A sunburst of white and gold. London's finest 20th century church. Anglo-Catholic liturgy, splendid music, warm welcome.

On this day, 22 years ago, I was made a deacon in the Church. What a rich and beautiful journey it has been! Such a joy to serve as a deacon today for our curate, Rachel’s first Eucharist. #treasureinheaven #deacon stpaulsmarylebone StCypriansBakerStreet London Diocese

It's the feast of St Swithun, 9th-century Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester. Since the Middle Ages, his day has been linked to weather-lore: it's said that in mid-July weather patterns shift, and if it rains on St Swithun's Day it will rain for 40 days. aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2017/07/that-t…

3/3 Looking east inside St Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral, Aberdeen. From 1935-41, Comper transformed the interior, adding vaulting to the flat-boarded ceilings and a baldachino and glass in the chancel. His work is in a number of other Episcopal churches in and around the city.

2/3 Comper's 1930s baldacchino in St Andrew's Episcopal cathedral, Aberdeen. It must have been very High Church in its day, although I'm afraid that both cathedral and diocese have fallen on hard times...

3/3 St Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral, Aberdeen. Comper vaulted the ceilings, and emblazoned the south aisle with the shields of Aberdeenshire Episcopalian families. In the north aisle there are shields of the American states. His makeover was paid for entirely with American money.

Today's the feast of the Transfiguration, instituted in 1456 and rarely found in English churches before the Reformation intervened. But on the early 16th Century screen at Westhall, Suffolk, it forms panels 5 to 7, Christ between Moses and Elijah. More: suffolkchurches.co.uk/Westhall.htm

2/3 Norfolk has a number of surviving medieval depictions of the Assumption, despite the doctrine being condemned by the reformers and images of it destroyed. A boss in the south porch at Walpole St Peter shows Mary in a mandorla of light being carried up to heaven by angels.
