This might be unpopular, but as a journalist and someone who is a MASSIVE fan of the genre/era, I'm genuinely confused as to why the term "hair metal" offends so many folks. To me, it's just another way to categorize a sub-genre. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I find it interesting though that other sub-genres of metal/hard rock from that era aren’t offensive. No one ever complains about thrash metal or death metal from the ‘80s having a label.

Also, per some of the responses here, let’s not pretend that image wasn’t a HUGE part of the bands categorized under this sub-genre. It was. No denying it. BUT — you can have the look and still be a phenomenal musician/songwriter. Two things can be true at the same time!
