Imagine the Scottish Government gets what it’s asking for: full fiscal autonomy. What happens then? And what is the significance of the so-called fiscal transfer? This short piece answers these key questions. these-islands.co.uk/publications/i…

“If a fiscally autonomous Scottish Government signalled that it was planning to borrow around 10% of GDP annually, the bond market’s response would be inevitable and unprintable.”

Interesting. Who do we believe here? Kate Forbes, who told BBC Debate Night the Scotsman story wasn’t true, but she didn’t have the time to explain why? Or the journalist who wrote that story, and stands by it?

“It is incumbent on SNP politicians to explain what changes they would implement [under full fiscal autonomy] to put things on a stable footing. Arm-waving talk about “levers” is not good enough. Which levers? And in which direction?”

This is why the SNP transmission (TNUoS) charge grievance is entirely bogus. Generators in Scotland are frequently paid to sit idle. The TNUoS charge effectively asks for some of that money back, to help unblock the bottleneck that caused the wasteful payments in the first place.

Important! On Wednesday, the Head of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, Jimmy Paul, spoke to BBC Radio Scotland and said the SVRU’s funding from Scot Gov had been cut. That same evening, Kate Forbes was adamant on BBC Debate Night that this hadn’t happened. (Part 1/3)

If Kate Forbes was telling the truth on Debate Night, then she is effectively accusing the head of a publicly funded organisation of lying. That is an incredibly serious matter. She should clarify if that is indeed what she is doing. (Part 2/3)

If Kate Forbes is not accusing Jimmy Paul of lying, then she herself was not telling the truth on Debate Night. Arguably an equally serious matter, but John Swinney seems to have a pretty relaxed attitude to that kind of thing. (Part 3/3)

And here is what Kate Forbes said on Debate Night on Wednesday evening, about Scot Gov funding for the SVRU. She was absolutely unambiguous: “We are not cutting their funding.” Somebody is not telling the truth.

This video shows two clips, both broadcast on 28th May. In the first, the Head of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, Jimmy Paul, states unambiguously that his organisation’s funding has been cut by 3%. In the second, Kate Forbes states unambiguously that it hasn’t. 🤔

An insane policy, but there is a perverse logic to it. If you are against weapons, objecting to military spending in general makes perfect sense. Because what would be the point of an unarmed military?

The SNP just cannot resist per capita statistics which tell you absolutely nothing. How exactly is an independent Scotland going to monetise these exports per capita?
