Unfortunately, what Schmidt experienced - while horrific - is devastatingly common. Detention by ICE/CBP often means little food or water, aggressive interrogation, denial of medication and lack of transparency. #abolishICE

this is horrific. & also this will be familiar to anyone representing ppl arrested by ICE. i've had clients arrested while taking out the trash, leaving for work, & riding the bus. they are never read any of their rights, or provided with a chance to call a lawyer. #abolishICE

exactly - even minor interactions w/ the criminal legal system can trigger immigration consequences. and if you are outraged by what this gentleman endured, you should know that it happens to many, many (nonwhite) immigrants on a regular basis & gets far less press. #AbolishICE
