We are deeply saddened by the passing of Prof Chabani Manganyi. His exceptional writing skills meant that he authored many books, five of which were published by Wits University Press; they have taken on the status of classics in their fields. We owe him an enormous debt of gratitude. RIP.

I know some of you are Stuart Hall heads. If that's you, then you might enjoy this film Handsworth Songs (experimental documentary about riots in 1985) and the debate Hall had about it with Salman Rushdie about it in the letters page of the Guardian.

It tears my heart to say that my father, Ngugi Wa Thiong'o passed away earlier today. I am me because of him in so many ways, as his child, scholar and writer. I love him - I am not sure what tomorrow will bring without him here. I think that is all I have to say for now.
