NEW: Here it is—the inside story of how astronomers tracked down 2024 YR4, the most dangerous asteroid ever found, in the hope of working out whether it would strike Earth in a few short years. It’s Don’t Look Up, but everyone lives. Me MIT Technology Review technologyreview.com/2025/07/08/111…

NEW: The warning has been downgraded to a TSUNAMI ADVISORY. It's likely that peak tsunami heights will be about 4 feet or less. Still – wave motions could cause damage at some marinas and docks.

Very cool update on 3I/ATLAS: the Vera Rubin Observatory (which hasn’t even got its survey going yet) has found images of the interstellar object going back to June 21, clearly showing a coma (that’s also expanding over time). Deffo a comet. (Not aliens.) arxiv.org/pdf/2507.13409

NEW: Betelgeuse, a big red star, will eventually explode. But despite its self-destructive proclivities, the irritable giant has managed to make, and keep, a friend: a companion star that Betelgeuse will, eventually and rudely, eat up. Me NYT Science nytimes.com/2025/07/21/sci…

Currently a Tsunami Watch (threat still being evaluated) for entire U.S./Canada West Coast following very large M 8.7) sub-oceanic quake near eastern Russia in West Pacific. Plenty of time to crunch numbers further for West Coast, but more imminent threat closer to epicenter.

Tsunami Warning – 7/30, 9:40am The Tsunami Advisory has been upgraded to a Tsunami Warning. Waves of up to 3m are expected. Those near coastal areas, rivers, or lakes should evacuate to higher ground immediately. #tsunami

This DOES appear to be a thrust/megathrust quake. Thrust quakes produce the most significant tsunamis. The Pacific plate (oceanic, dense) is subducting (sliding/thrusting beneath) the Okhotsk Plate. This is a well-known subduction zone associated with BIG quakes.

Magnitude 8.7 #earthquake in Kamchatka, following a M7.4 last week - may be largest earthquake since 2011, 8th largest on record globally, #tsunami warning in place for US west coast and Canada - the closeby 1952 M9 caused a destructive tsunami

A M8.7 struck Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, #Russia, an hour ago (days ago M7.4 struck the same area). The #tsunami alert was issued. It seems to be a megathrust #earthquake. These thrust quakes produce the most significant tsunamis. This subduction zone is well-known for big quakes

UPDATE: Tsunami alerts are in effect for multiple U.S. states and British Columbia. Tsunami WARNING for Hawaii and part of the Aleutians. Tsunami WATCH for California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia. Biggest worldwide #earthquake since 2011.

A few things we know: – BIGGEST quake in 14 years (8.8 is incredible) – MEGATHRUST quake (Pacific plate slides beneath Okhotsk plate – Very favorable for damaging tsunami – Tsunami already observed in Kamchatka Peninsula – Vertical displacement of sea floor

Earthquake/tsunami experts: it’s a very tricky time of day but if anyone’s able to answer some quick questions about what’s happening in the Pacific, that would be hugely helpful. Let me know!

Hey volcano-seismo peeps—a question. I've been writing about the Kamchatka quake + tsunami, but it's not escaped my notice that Klyuchevskoy volcano starts erupting too. Is this a coincidence, or could the changing stress field in the region have set this volcano off? LMK!

NEW: A magnitude 8.8 megaquake blasted tsunami waves across the Pacific today. Here's everything you need to know about it, including: -Why it happened -Why it generated a widespread tsunami -Why the timing of this megaquake is pretty weird Me National Geographic nationalgeographic.com/science/articl…

NEW: You may wonder why Japan’s 2011 mag-9.1 quake created a colossal tsunami that killed 18,000 people, while today’s mag-8.8 quake made a big, but not catastrophic, tsunami. For Scientific American, I explore why. (Hint: the 2011 quake was SO much stronger.) scientificamerican.com/article/why-th…
