Yes. DEFRA just gave someone a £350,000 grant to investigate frost monitoring although personally I think it’s a waste of money. It’s realistic, more economical and sustainable methods of frost protection that are needed. Wasting heat and water are not the solution.

It depends on so many factors. Bare firm earth retains the heat best and allows for the air to roll down hill and the frost does no (or at least less) damage. Cover crops inc grass hold moisture and prevent frost air rolling so easily or at all.

I saw Sam Lindo Sam Lindo last night, and he said that they had bud burst on Chardonnay and Rondo in Cornwall. Looking back at my records, this is as early as 2017 and we all know what happened in that frosty year! Fingers crossed for the next few weeks.

You don’t always get a reserve bud with Chardonnay, but backup may well be required this spring.

A great bottle of wine given to me by an old friend. She didn’t think it would be drinkable after 30+ years in the bottle. Cork was sound although fill height low. It’s got great fruit, is noticeably Viognier and well balanced. Thanks Miyoko.
