Recent coverage of South Africa has been a nightmare. An American editor called me to say the "world's concluded South Africa is 'over'"--"falling apart" (NYT), "in ruins" (New Yorker), "destroyed" (UK Sunday Times). Would I write about the end of South Africa? she asked.

There is a much broader question of how to reconcile the need for continuous economic growth with reduced consumption/conservation. Innovation introducing efficiency is the only out I can think of.
