Extremely important reporting by Sophie Novack, who found out that Tarrant County Sheriff Waybourn appears to be failing to meet the state requirements to investigate deaths under his custody. boltsmag.org/jail-crisis-lo…

Jail deaths have spiked under Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn—who's running for reelection—with 65 deaths in less than eight years. Now it seems he's skirting requirements for death investigations, in apparent violation of Texas law. New for Bolts boltsmag.org/jail-crisis-lo…

In states with abortion bans, any woman who is pregnant, whether she wants her baby or not, is at risk of doctors being too scared to properly treat them if something goes wrong. Read about the death of 18-year-old Neveah. propublica.org/article/nevaeh…

This is tragic anywhere but the fact it happened in East Texas indicates the growing lack of options for women in that region as Eleanor Klibanoff pointed out in 2023. texastribune.org/2023/01/05/jas…

Texas is also one of at least 11 states where little-known laws ban abortion in PUBLIC hospitals. So there is a whole web of anti-abortion laws and policies in the state that lie underneath SB 8 and Dobbs. rewirenewsgroup.com/2019/03/07/not…

Important 🧵It doesn't diminish fact that abortion bans cause deadly delays in care. But to the extent pregnant people in ban states have any control over their care, they should know Catholic hospitals are especially dangerous when it comes to managing pregnancy complications.

BREAKING: A *rare* abortion rights win in Texas – voters in the conservative city of Amarillo have voted AGAINST an abortion travel ban that would have empowered residents to sue anyone who "aids and abets" abortion access across state lines. Bkgrnd: texasobserver.org/far-right-abor…

NEW: A conservative sheriff in one of nation's biggest counties, Tarrant (Fort Worth), was up after overseeing a surge in jail deaths—while he courts the national conservative press. He won reelection, and Sophie Novack looked at what's next: boltsmag.org/a-scandal-plag…

I've been thinking about Texans especially who shared these kinds of stories on the campaign trail. We had a near-total abortion ban for almost a year before Dobbs; pledges to "restore Roe" wouldn't restore access here. Really they were trying to warn others elsewhere.

NEW: Texas Republicans are pushing sweeping anti-abortion legislation that would give the attorney general new power to enforce a century-old abortion ban that could criminalize pregnant people and those who help access abortion—including out of state. boltsmag.org/texas-1925-abo…

On this too, Texas is an example. State lawmakers spent years defunding Planned Parenthood: kicking it out of women’s health programs, slashing family planning funds, shuttering clinics and funneling millions to anti-abortion groups instead. How that went: texasobserver.org/inside-texas-f…

Abbott's call also includes further abortion restrictions—giving anti-abortion folks another shot to pass a sweeping bill targeting abortion pills, which could criminalize pregnant people & further restrict access to emergency care boltsmag.org/texas-1925-abo… slate.com/news-and-polit…
