I'm doing an online presso (2nd Nov) with New Zealand Police, Netsafe NZ, Love Assist Associates and CERT NZ about online scams, with a special focus on advice for mature audiences. Pass the following link onto anyone you think may need some help in this area. eventbrite.co.nz/e/cyber-scams-…

I’m still in slightly disbelieving shock but if it’s on twitter it must be true, right? 😆 Huge thanks, in addition to those mentioned below, to Evidence-Based Policing Centre New Zealand Police for supporting my #geographicprofiling research!

Great episode! Brilliant interview with the developer of LaMDA AI about artificial intelligence, sentience and sapience, not just for the comprehensive and comprehensible coverage of the topic but the exemplary demonstration of how to argue well. Skeptics at their finest. 👏

I asked my new slightly crappy intern Chatty G whether it can access journal articles behind paywalls (too good a thought to be true of course). It replied it can't, and suggested I ask it to make a poem about paywalls. It's rather great, if you ignore the slightly crappy rhymes.

A cautionary tale for anyone doing research with police data. [grabs megaphone, clears throat] 📢 To properly analyse administrative data you need someone who understands how the data was produced 📢

Matt Ashby (@lesscrime) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Please don't map crimes like this! 1. Only a small proportion of shoplifting is reported to police (? <10%), so the data isn't reliable. 2. Diverging colour schemes are misleading for sequential variables. 3. 'per 1,000 residents' is the wrong denominator for shoplifting.
