highly specialized DIY IRGA chamber and platform, courtesy of my PI, Dylan Fischer! Let's see what these prairie soil microbes have to say about longterm effects of prescribed burns!

"Roots of a cholla, Opuntia echinocarpa, in the Mojavean Desert. Although the stem was only 6 dm tall and only about 4 cm in diameter, one root was followed for nearly 11 m, and at its deepest descent it was only about 7.5 cm beneath the surface."

I’m presenting undergrad research I did at The Evergreen State College on the long term nutrient cycling effects of prescribed burns in native PNW grassland prairies today at #ESA2024! Room 103A at 4:30p. Come on by! ESA Biogeoscience

Today I was told that I am anti-science, stupid, and have no understanding of permafrost. Despite the loud noise, climate scientists and communicators are still doing their best to spread understanding and awareness. Please amplify them.

Happy Friday. This Sphagnum moss looks peaceful but they are actually acid-flinging ecological ninjas that starve other plants from nitrogen. Wee but mighty - they store more carbon in their biomass than any plant genus. Screw pocket forests, we need to promote backyard bogs.

super fascinating that these amf and emf associations mediate tree belowground C investments under increased N, but ultimately do NOT affect C storage… awesome methodology with stable isotope tracing through these mycorrhizal mediated networks, too! 🍄🍄‍🟫🌱🌲
