We have wintering Hoopoe, but these are now being complimented by arriving birds. Hopefully, many more will be returning over the next few weeks and provide some colour to the spring here in Andalucía.

Bird migration here can cause consternation for some local residents! A local Jay gets flustered by the appearance of a migrant Short-toed Eagle.

Thistle plants are such an important food source for many birds and with around 60 species of thistle in the region, it must seem like paradise to birds such as Goldfinch and Greenfinch. More about the plantlife here we recommend visiting this blog: andaluciaflowers.blogspot.com

Yesterday we saw many Large Tortoiseshell butterflies and appears to have been a big hatch recently. Little early for these, but warm sunny days seem to have brought them out.

With unseasonal warmth some of our local birds are already starting to behave as if spring is already here. Local Serin can currently be seen displaying with their bat-like display flights and heard singing from prominent perches. Exciting and a little worrying in equal measure.

Good numbers of Ring Ouzel are here with us this winter, the cold fronts further north in the peninsula have most likely increased numbers here. So, worth getting up into our mountain areas to see these beautiful thrushes.
