The wikiup is a typical winter shelter and was 12 to 14 ft in diameter. A shallow pit was dug, willow poles set close together around it, bent over and bound at top. Battens were lashed around outside and many courses of dry grass applied. 📸: Edward S. Curtis, A Mono Home, 1924

Captain Adam H. Bogardus popularized trapshooting and invented a machine that propelled feather-filled glass balls into the air, replacing birds as targets. Captain Bogardus shot 5,000 glass balls during an exhausting eight-hour exhibition, breaking all but 163 targets.
