It’s unfortunate and disheartening to see that immigration as a topic in the media has become all about security and not about the human aspect of it all. Worse part is that Kamala Harris accepted it during this CNN interview. It’s also so dangerous for our immigrant community.

even immigration reporting roles in newsrooms are often clubbed in with national security reporting roles. like that's often what the perception of the beat is or it's the same team. so this is a longtime structural phenomenon and i think it's worth questioning.

Beyond 2024, "the growing “nonwhite populism” could transform American partisan politics. If Democrats want to contest increasingly-Latino Texas, they should consider Sanders’ success in Latino areas when forming their economic legislative agenda and electoral platform."

More and more we're seeing that the Democrats' commitment to migration justice during the Trump administration was an aberration, a blip in a longer history of bipartisan support for border enforcement and constrained asylum access to those seeking safety and refuge in the US.

I spent time in Springfield OH reporting on Haitian migration. Some of the nasty misinfo being echoed today was already circulating. I spoke to officer Jason Via, Deputy Director Public Safety: "We haven't really seen any of that. It's really frustrating" npr.org/2024/08/12/nx-…

I'm glad MULawPoll keeps asking about deportation policies. And I continue to think Democrats are missing an opportunity to present an actual alternative to the Trump era GOP's pro-deportation policies, instead of trying to be Republican Lite. therecombobulationarea.news/p/harris-leads…

If only someone was researching the history of Christian opposition to movements for migration justice....stay tuned... In the meantime, check out this 1985 anti-sanctuary cartoon from The Wanderer, a traditionalist Catholic newspaper.

A new president could in fact strip over 400,000 Haitians of the temporary protected status which is authorizing their continued presence here. Trump tried to end Haitian TPS in his first term, and was only stopped by courts due to the sloppy way DHS went about it.

Democrats have lost the stomach for migration justice. "The irony is that America’s relationship with immigrants is everyone’s problem. It is both a pocketbook issue and an issue—perhaps the issue—most determinative of national character, the kind of country we are."

I feel like we all know this, but “illegal immigrant” isn’t a description of legal status but a racialized category, and you can’t win against this by fact checking it
