Our love letter to DC 💌 We love this city, & this is how we show our love. In times like these, everyone in DC has to stay united & look out for each other. We’ll keep making gear that reinforces our need for Statehood, Autonomy & Home Rule 👊🏽 Stay strong DC!

#BreakingNews - DC Mayor Muriel Bowser - unlike her muted public responses – tore into Trump’s move against DC today in a constituent Zoom meeting. “We don’t live in a dirty city. We are not 700,000 scumbags and punks…we don’t have neighborhoods that should be bulldozed.” Washington City Paper

Let's repeat that: at THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO. I'm still reeling from the news that Indiana University is going to shutter its Uralo-Altaic studies program, where endless diplomats have hsd their language training. Who needs to study Eurasia?

Part of the local context for having a flag over a bridge here is the "Surrender Dorothy" sign that infamously was on a bridge over the Beltway in the 80s as you approach the Mormon Temple, which (to me as a child) looks a little like the Emerald City. Same vibe here.

With all of the new federal law enforcement out on D.C. streets, make sure to follow Potomac press and NEWS FROM THE CONCRETE. These guys are local, they know they lay of the land, and they're often getting lots of on-the-ground footage from residents who are seeing what's happening.

JD Vance's secret service has been knocking on doors in the Cotswolds and asking people for the names of everybody living in the house and details of their social media. Several people refused.

They are charging him under a federal statute instead of D.C. law, which has a higher bar for charging an assault on a police officer as a felony. On the federal side there is a much lower standard for actual harm the officer could face.

A fascinating new WaPo poll shows that despite Trump's claims that D.C. is a dystopian hellscape run by criminal gangs, the percentage of residents who say crime is a serious problem is down significantly from 2023 and 2024. Also, fears of assaults and carjackings are down.

I dont know what's more depressing: the fact that reading for pleasure has fallen by 40% in the US in the last 20 years - or that 2% of adults seem read with children

Look at this beauty. One of the 24 animal statues Sultan Abdülaziz ordered from Paris in 1864. This one is tucked up in front of the Divan Hotel, off Taksim. Best known is bull in #Kadıköy

Pat Yale It's a good week for public sculpture! I've been with a sick friend in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the past few days and really enjoyed this fountain, despite its underlying message. It's meant to represent Pan as Nature being conquered by a nymph as Culture.

It’s fair to say that “I don’t care what they think” has been the prevailing mentality amongst many in Congress and other positions of power about D.C. residents since, well, about the time the city was founded.

People I talk to outside DC do not understand what's happening. On my way to work, three cars surrounded a fourth, five guys got out in masks, wearing no agency name, grabbed a man from the car, shoved them in theirs, and drove off.
