Today we're thinking about another phonological awareness skill: initial sounds. Like other skills , this awareness builds up over time Today's activity gets us matching animals to the things they 'like' based on the first sound of their names and the items.

We're revisiting activities about syllable awareness as part of our series on Phonological Awareness.
Today's activity is a fun one! We've included pictures you can use to practise, but you can do this task with things you have around you. Lets talk like robots! 🤖

In March we are focussing on phonological awareness skills. These skills help us understand the smaller units of sounds that make up words - things like rhyme awareness, understanding syllables and identifying initial sounds. Find out more here: tinyurl.com/yeyvmz4a

Today we're thinking about learning to say new speech sounds. This is a tricky process & takes lots of time & practice - even naturally developing sounds may be used in some words but not all for a while. Some of the steps it takes are shown here

Another common question we get about speech development is when different sounds are expected to develop. Check our visuals to see the minimum we would expect in terms of speech sound learning at different ages and stages of children's development.

We get asked about tongue tie lots. Tongue tie is when tissue joins the bottom of the tongue tip to the floor of the mouth. It does not affect language development but some researchers think it could affect certain sounds e.g. t, d, l, r. Find out more:

Hope can be scarce. But in this article I wanted to articulate how we can improve the lives of children in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Spoken language is one area of child development that is most amenable to change and has profound benefits for learning, well-being and behaviour sej.org.uk/feb2024/langua…

A second clip for you today as a reminder that conversations start earlier than you think!
Treat all of the things your baby says and does as their way to keep the conversation going.
