Grade 2 students are repurposing old paper scraps to create new art in the form of fish collages. Students' main tools today are their fingers, thumbs, and wrists, as they exercise their fine motor skills. seldens.landing.es #arteducation

First graders, in the words of artist Paul Klee, took a line for a walk, overlapping it, making zig-zags and waves, and creating organic shapes and spaces. Within those spaces, colors and patterns were made and repeated a couple of times, each. seldens.landing.es #arteducation

3rd grade is drawing monochromatic sea turtle designs, exhibiting an array of patterns within surrounding spaces. We also looked at how contrast between color and the absence of color can create a striking image. Students chose what to include in the shell space. seldens.landing.es

Fifth-graders are working on complementary (opposite) colored Op Art patterns using their hands as the main subject matter. Students are learning how line and color can create an optical illusion when used in a certain way. seldens.landing.es #arteducation

It's that time again! SLES students are working on self-portraits for the PTA Square 1 Art fundraiser. Already, we're off to a very good start! seldens.landing.es #arteducation

Fifth-graders are illustrating ideas for a collaborative lesson with Shepherd U art ed students. Shepherd students will take inspiration from our Seldens students, and design, paint, and install a mural showcasing the Three Rs in our cafeteria! seldens.landing.es #arteducation

Kindergarten is working on wax-resist shape-fish for our Square 1 Art lesson. Using the 3 warm colors, students drew and colored shape-fish, then added an ocean floor. Soon they'll paint with watercolors, for the ocean, using the 3 cool colors! seldens.landing.es #arteducation

Kindergarten students painted with watercolors for the first time, today. We learned how to dip our brushes in the water to make our paint "work", and how to dip them in the water again, before changing colors. With practice, they're going to get even better! seldens.landing.es

Seldens students are adding the final touches to their self-portraits for Square One Art, and some of them are looking spectacular! seldens.landing.es #arteducation

Our first-graders are drawing and painting beautiful vertical and horizontal Autumn trees, as the leaves outside just starting to change colors. seldens.landing.es #arteducation

More student self-portraits for our PTA Square 1 Art fundraiser are rolling in on the last week to work on them! Love some of the different styles and approaches they took when portraying themselves. seldens.landing.es #arteducation

Our Art Clubbers have been working diligently on jack-o-lantern collages for our upcoming Spooky Bingo event. Some of them are getting very creative with their facial expressions! seldens.landing.es #arteducation

Fourth graders are hand-building with clay and learning how to make 3d sculptures (fish) from slabs. Learning how to attach and secure parts such as eyes, fins, and tongues is an important part of this lesson. Customizing their fish is the fun part! seldens.landing.es #arteducation

Just got an update regarding our fifth-grade students' collaboration with Shepherd U art ed students. Sketches for the Three Rs mural were made into beautiful collages to be displayed at our school, while the mural has been prepped for painting! seldens.landing.es #arteducation

Gr 5 has been sketching from animal figurines, in preparation for making imaginary animal species that can live on Earth. We looked at the drawings of da Vinci and more and discussed the value of learning through observation, particularly drawing. seldens.landing.es #arteducation

It's amazing, the educational resources we have in our own backyard, including the National Gallery of Art, just off the Smithsonian Metro rail station. Last weekend Mr. Loya made a visit, looked around at lots of art, and took lots of photos! seldens.landing.es #arteducation

Fall is in full swing in northern VA, and our first graders have captured the spirit of the season in their Autumn tree drawings/paintings. seldens.landing.es #arteducation

I had a wonderful time presenting at the 2022 Virginia Art Ed Assn conference in Richmond, last week. A fantastic group of VA art educators joined me in creating Splotch Monsters, and I also learned a lot from the wide variety of workshops offered this year! seldens.landing.es #vaeaarted

The great thing about the #VAEAarted2022 conference happening in Richmond, was getting a chance to visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This was my first visit, and it was spectacular, and free to the public. Hoping to visit Virginia Museum of Fine Arts again soon. seldens.landing.es
