For the entire therapy session each week, the therapist is able to focus on small details about the child. Experiencing this hyperfocus can improve a child's self-worth and self-esteem. Knowing that someone is making an effort to understand them can feel empowering.

Children will be unlikely to have the words to describe the situations they've experienced. They may complain of somatic symptoms such as a tummy ache or headache instead. In Play Therapy, children can use the toys in place of words to express and process their experiences.

When a childs stress response system is activated, they cannot access the thinking part of the brain. We must not go straight for the cortex. We must regulate lower brain parts of the brain, which are oversensitised. Young people cannot reason when emotions are not regulated.🧠🌱

Children understanding their window of tolerance is important in doing trauma work or just working with children in schools. This teaches children how to manage their emotions under stress by giving them a toolkit of inner resources to self-soothe & keep within their window. 🧠🌱

#BAPTAdventCalendar2024 Children often lack the language or cognitive ability to process intense emotions verbally, so toys and symbolic play become essential tools for helping them navigate these feelings safely and constructively.   Jay Cerio

These families are understandably anxious and desperate to get their children the life-saving help they need. There are children in England already getting this treatment for free but Scots are still waiting. This requires urgency from the SNP Government.
