Very sorry to hear that Professor Ross Anderson passed away last night. Aside from his (numerous) contributions to Information Security, he was a mentor to and advocate for many researchers in the field. He will be sadly missed but leaves behind a strong legacy.

I like to think of privacy-enhancing technologies based on whether they can be deployed without the permission of the existing authorities (e.g. E2E encryption, Tor). These have the most potential to disrupt power dynamics. Others, as Matthew says, could make privacy worse.
