Europe faces a choice: a more multi-ethnic continent or labour shortages, tax rises, stretched public services. My FT op-ed

How do protests against the far right impact their electoral standing? Analyzing a unique dataset of protests, antonis ellinas & Iasonas Lamprianou find effectively timed protests reduce support for far-right parties by up to 16 percent.

Evidence-based policy on migration? Not much evidence for that, is there?

I'm very happy to be coordinating this Horizon Europe project trying to link research/evidence to policy/practice with 11 partner organisations.

Found out more about our plans in the blog linked below ⬇️

Local elections in the UK today are the 1st time in 7 years that I can vote for a representative where I live. Regulations of voting rights are outdated in our globalized world. They de facto disenfranchise millions. More inclusive voting rights should be a main goal of the Left

Unsurprisingly, Edward Luce's take on the campus protests is by some distance the best and most sophisticated I have read.

Just arrived in Stockholm and immediately ran into the workers May Day parade. Can’t remember the last time I heard a brass band playing The Internationale

Don’t you just love it when the voters on the right fail to coordinate, particularly in a FPTP electoral system!

If this is anywhere near right, the next election will be the most consequential in my life-time (some time!).

I bring this up in the light of Aslak Berg's paper below (h/t Jacob Öberg).

🇬🇧 is not alone. It is the same situation 🇲🇽&🇨🇦 next to 🇺🇸, 🇺🇾 beside 🇧🇷, 🇻🇳🇰🇷🇱🇦 in 🇨🇳's back garden, 🇱🇰🇳🇵and others facing 🇮🇳.

I do think a problem in academia (social science at least) is that we focus very heavily on outputs, rather than process.

This is true in the training we offer (much of which is reading finished work) and in what we reward in the profession more broadly (counting publications).

Somehow managed to summarise my entire PhD thesis on the growing UK voting age gap in 1000 words for the The Political Studies Association blog. Give it a read! ⬇️

Mussolini was executed by Italian partisans on 28 April 1945 on the shores of Lake Como. This thread is a must-read for anyone who doesn't know about the circumstances of his capture and the mysterious deaths of partisans Luigi Canali and Giuseppina Tuissi in the following weeks

Agree with this evaluation. What the Conservatives are planning to do here is a fantasy for most RR parties in Europe. The end for this government can’t come quickly enough.

I somehow missed this excellent interview with Vicente Valentim Vicente Valentim on his research into the dynamics of the radical right's normalisation in Europe, but nearly two years later, it has become even more relevant. Well worth your time.

Good piece on the differences between three of Europe's populist radical right parties by Tony Barber, which cites an article by Toby Greene on their attitudes to Russia and the US (see next post for deets) 1/2 ft.com/content/8b88f8… via @ft
