And for government and opposition parties creating policy on the basis of the Review, it stands to reason that you put your best people on it – grown-ups familiar with the background who will understand all the detail – to formulate a response for your party

Happily, this seems to have happened in both major parties. The health secretary seems to have read Cass and is good on the detail. Same goes for her shadow, who will probably have her job soon. I'm privately told that Wes Streeting MP has been reading up and is a sincere convert

That makes the behaviour of the minor parties all the more appalling. Both the Lib Dems and the Greens allowed their histrionic LGBT+ groups to issue immediate responses, which were based on malicious misinformation, now categorically debunked

All political parties contain lunatics who drive the grown-ups up the wall, and the loons can be hard to appease or fend off. But only the stupidest and most morally vacuous parties allow those lunatics to dictate their policy

The Lib Dems allowed their LGBT+ group to get in first, with an incoherent six-line statement about the 'undeniable transphobia' of Cass. It gave no indication that anyone involved in the drafting of the statement had read any of the Review.

The grown-ups in the Lib Dems – who have 15 MPs, 84 members of the House of Lords and were in government a decade ago – were alarmed enough to have the statement taken down. But they have not replaced it with any more considered response.

As for the Greens, they eventually released a bland statement cherry-picking a few uncontentious points of Cass that they agreed with, and ignoring all the inconvenient parts that highlighted the danger of the gender-woo approach the Greens have aggressively promoted for years

But even that proved too grown-up for them. Within an hour, the statement had disappeared. Instead, the Green candidate for Mayor of London popped up with a video gratuitously attacking the Cass Review (without any attempt to substantiate the attack)

Even as that video was ratioed into kingdom come – with former two-times Green mayoral candidate Darren Johnson calling it 'absolutely effing outrageous' – the Green Party deputy leader applauded the candidate for 'speaking with total clarity'

Let's just restate, lest we forget: this is a child medical abuse scandal. It's about untested drugs being used with weak-to-zero medical evidence, for conditions that Cass says don't, in most cases, need medicalising.

Instead of reading the report, Green politicians are recycling threepenny gotchas formulated on the cuff by mentally ill adults who are using children to validate their trans identities, and by private practitioners who have grown rich selling unlicensed drugs to the confused
