Compete picture of the two earthquake ruptures now available from the Sentinel-1 descending pass. Copernicus EU COMET Datasets & Services Image below is range offsets from pixel tracking. The two ruptures appear not to be connected. Scale of event is horrific - the image is ~250 km across

Map of M7.4 Alaska shallow thrust earthquake today (approximate location with green star) in tectonic context using a figure from the 2021 Chignik earthquake paper from Ye et al. (2022). Today’s event appears to be located in Shumagin gap area.

Last week it was MAST’s first annual meeting! 🌋🛰️ We welcomed researchers from University of Bristol Earth Sciences, Bristol School of Computer Science, as well as Catherine Annen from Czech Academy of Sciences and Sylvain Barbot from USC, to discuss science, collaborations and progress! European Research Council (ERC) What did we do? 🧵 1/8

PAPER ALERT!!! I am happy to share the publication of my PhD work. Nature Geoscience nature.com/articles/s4156… With Pablo Ampuero and Andres Tassara, using numerical simulations of earthquake cycle, we investigate the feasibility and behaviour of Velocity Weakening barriers.

A M7.0 earthquake struck the China-Kyrgyzstan border just after midnight, in bitter cold. With severe shaking, this event is likely serious. The quake likely occurred on the South Tien Shan fault, which in the past has produced M8+ events. Read more on our blog; link in my bio.

Is there any evidence of Slow Slip Events in the southern Peru-northern Chile subduction zone? Yes, (@cokejaragomez)Jara et al. find tiny events hidden in the geodetic noise. Read more to see how they detected and characterized them: seismica.library.mcgill.ca/article/view/9…

Excited to see our work on the 2024 Noto EQ led by Liuwei Xu, Ji Chen, and Lingsen Meng featured on the cover of Science Magazine! Combining seismic & geodetic data, we found complex ruptures in the initial stage of this New Year's EQ that led to violent shaking

The first images from the Copernicus EU #Sentinel1 C satellite are here! 📸 Svalbard 📸 Amsterdam and the region of Flevoland 📸 Brussels Fun fact: Brussels was the subject of the first radar image captured by Sentinel-1A in April 2014.

Holy shit! This is incredible footage of surface rupture forming on the Sagaing Fault during the #MyanmarEarthquake in Thazi. It's the first time such a phenomenon has been captured!
