A grand old name in European football, with a fascinating (sometimes controversial) history and huge following, here on a mural in Knin, 100k from Split. 'Hajduk' imperfectly translates to 'bandit' but with added moral fibre.

Classic Soto Ayam plus the slightly bonkers Kopi Jos (coffee with a lump of red-hot charcoal thrown in), typical Yogyakarta late-night snack

Finished my dining tour of the food stalls New Chester Market today. All fab, but the one obvious issue is that you could be anywhere: few references to locality, region or even nation. A blend of the global and the local would be wonderful (loads of inspiring examples abroad)

Whenever I express my dislike of post-1990s #halloween people say that guising/mischief night has been part of British Isles culture for centuries. So why didn't we spread/revive that rather than the appalling imported version? Rhetorical question, I know the answer...

I reckon Musk is wrong. We're heading for a world where footballers are the only people left in paid employment and the rest of us watch them 24/7. Could be worse.

Always my favourite moment in any Olympics. All the yachts, horses, privilege and arbitrary silliness disappear and then an East African blasts everybody away in the 10k #OlympicGamesParis2024

Is there a link between young people's increasing teetotalism and rising mental health issues, given they miss out on the obvious benefits of alcohol: relaxation, conviviality etc?#R4FoodProgramme

Not to mention Dry January's devastating effects on our most tangible and unique cultural asset, the pub? #R4FoodProgramme #CAMRA

Obvious nightmare scenario: Tories offer Farage leadership/takeover in return for dissolving/merging Reform. Decisive swing to right, win next election, Farage PM, enacts 'real Brexit', main Trump ally in ultra close 'special relationship' #yougovpoll

Out of the country for a bit so I'm sure many have already made this observation, but flags on lamposts have a long history in Northern Ireland, that famed model of community harmony #flagsuk

It was once de rigueur to have footage of obese topless Geordies whenever a big game was on at St James's Park. Looking at the crowd tonight, no moobs, no sagging flesh, all fully clothed. Warm evening too. #sportswashing #UCL #Saudi

I've only ever heard two British people use the globish expression 'my friend', Stephen Merchant and Gregg Wallace. It doesn't keep me awake at night, just mildly stimulated.

Haaland always puts me in mind of Jonah Lomu (rather than another footballer), that same slightly freakish, unplayable combination of physical characteristics. #Haaland #championsleague
