Over a decade ago, I took classes on the Middle East at Duke that inspired me. This fall, one of my students, whose honors thesis on hip-hop in Morocco I had the honor to advise at Dartmouth, will enroll in a Ph.D. program in Cultural Anthropology at Duke. A full circle moment.

To have a scholar, whose work you admire, engage with your book is a gift. Alf shukr, Andrea L Stanton! Your words moved me. 'This is a history of the ordinary, the everyday, and the everyone - and that is its power...The book is also a love letter to Sur al-Ezbekiyya...' 🥹

This talk on the history of house in Chicago the other day Dartmouth Arts and Sciences was tremendous. Moving from Beyoncé's 'Renaissance' to Disco Demolition Night, april l. graham-jackson highlighted the importance of oral history and taking a multi-sensory approach to the past. 🎶

Ahmad Adawiya, Shaykh Imam, and Hassan al-Asmar all surface on this modern Egypt mixtape. A thousand thanks to the Ottoman History Podcast podcast for taking an interest in this story! To appear on the same episode as a mentor of mine, Ziad Fahmy, is special. open.spotify.com/episode/2pLKun…

Boston friends, if you'll be in town this Wednesday it would be wonderful to see you at Harvard CMES, where I'll be sharing some aspects of Egypt's cassette culture. Many thanks to Rosie Bsheer, the author of the brilliant 'Archive Wars,' for the invitation to do so. 🎶

Iman Mersal’s “Traces of Enayat” is now available in English, and reading about this story’s origins, a serendipitous discovery at a Cairo book market, has me missing Sur al-Ezbekiyya. nytimes.com/2024/03/31/boo…

Physical media in the age of streaming services. This The Guardian feature focuses on DVDs, but the same may be said of vinyl records and cassettes, making digital archives that preserve and popularize cultural productions past all the more important now. amp.theguardian.com/film/2024/mar/…

This is a novel not to be missed. I first encountered Aisha’s writing in graduate school and was blown away by it. Seeing “Between Two Moons” now in print years later, a story set in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn against the backdrop of Ramadan, is beyond exciting. 📚

'In Cairo, where electronic music was invented, El Shazly’s music goes back to the future.' It's an honor to see 'Media of the Masses' cited in this new 4Columns feature by Geeta Dayal on Nadah El Shazly, an artist who is redefining experimental music.🎶 4columns.org/dayal-geeta/na…
