I just introduced the Azerbaijan Sanctions Review Act to take action against 44 Azerbaijani officials following the ethnic cleansing of Armenians from Artsakh and the violent repression of political opposition.

The U.S. must take a strong stand against the genocide of Armenians.

In 1997-1999 Heydar Aliyev destroyed most Armenian/Christian monuments in Nakhichevan, except Djulfa & lesser known sites (his son Ilham would finish the job in 2005-06). Shortly after US Ambassador Carey Cavanaugh gave Heydar a piece of a mosque under Armenian control, & more.

Lying about the heritage of these churches is part of the process of destroying them.

It's about claiming ownership and starting the process of rewriting history before the structures are demolished.

In 2021 Azerbaijan's state-handled Christian religious leaders, joined by Sheikh ul-Islam, visited St. John the Baptist (Kanach Zham), built by Armenians in 1847, proclaimed it 'Russian,' prayed there, then praised Aliyev's tolerance.

2.5 years later Aliyev destroyed the church.

“A picture of a prayer session inside St. John the Baptist in Nagorno-Karabakh was [tweeted] by [an] Azerbaijani parliament member… in 2021 [as] an ‘atmosphere of ethnic & religious tolerance’… Today that church, built by Armenians… no longer exists.” rferl.org/a/azerbaijan-a…

Over a century later, we see the ethnic cleansing of Armenians continuing in Nagorno-Karabakh – a reminder that this fight is still not over.

I am proud to be a cosponsor of the Armenian Genocide Education Act, so that future generations may learn from this tragedy.
