#OnThisDay in 1874, Marianne and Mary's boat was hauled up the rapids of the Great Bab.

The crew, helped by 300 local men, spent four days pulling the boat past the First Cataract of the Nile.

This was the most dangerous stretch of the river that Marianne and Mary encountered.
