We have fully funded postdoc positions available to study many aspects of protein quality control, including folding, synthesis, and unfolding. Would love to chat with anyone interested to learn about the opportunities we have to offer.

We're featuring Dr. Lisa Eshun-Wilson Lisa Eshun-Wilson for #SeeingDiversity this month! Lisa is a postdoctoral fellow Scripps Research with Dr. Gabe Lander. Her work is currently focused on mitochondrial quality control, and in particular, the protease YME1, shown below.

Our department challenged each lab to present an animation about their research program. Proud of my student, Deirdre Mack (@cryo_dm), for preparing this!

In collaboration with Janet Iwasa and Julia Brasch (Julia Brasch), we are thrilled to announce that the first chapter of CryoET 101 is officially released! Curious about cryo-ET and if it's the right method for your project? Check it out at cryoem101.org/chapter-1-et/.

Were you always wondering what cryo-ET is and if it would help your research project? In collaboration with Janet Iwasa and Peter Shen we are excited to announce that cryoET 101 is officially released. cryoem101.org/chapter-1-et/ This is only the beginning! #teamtomo

Really looking forward to this tomorrow. Not a typical talk, but I think it would be helpful to share how we've overcome many technical hurdles on our way to determining cool structures. Hope folks will join me in commiserating over how cryo-EM is as much art as it is science.

We all have taken different and interesting paths in our scientific journey. Jeanette will share her pathway and journey this coming Friday. Looking forward to it!

Thrilled to announce the rollout of CryoET 101, Chapter 2: Sample and Grid Prep! Our most content-heavy chapter yet... and deservedly so because of the many tools available for cryo-ET applications. Learn about them here: cryoem101.org/chapter-2-et/ Julia Brasch Janet Iwasa

Hello #TeamTomo! We (the team behind CryoEM101.org) would love your help to make an image gallery to show potential issues w sample prep. We really need images of non-ideal samples: broken lamella, incomplete vitrification, ice crystals, thick samples, etc!

I'm looking forward to giving a basic overview of cryo-EM data processing. I'll be covering general considerations when it comes to 1) gauging image quality, 2) the steps in a typical project workflow, and 3) gauging reconstruction quality. Join me here: ter.li/84cy5g

New study challenges established model of how proteins help each other fold. A cool finding based on research led by Peter Shen U of Utah Dept of Biochemistry University of Utah Health and Barry Willardson BYU published in Molecular Cell. uofuhealth.utah.edu/newsroom/news/…

Thanks to Sophia Friesen for this writeup! When we embarked on this journey, we could not fathom that we'd end up visualizing and modeling the transformation of an unfolded protein from a molten globule state to a folded 3D structure. We are watching protein folding in action.

Our lab is recruiting a new postdoc to join our team to study mechanisms of protein quality control! Hit me up if you're interested in the biochemistry and structural biology of the Cdc48/p97/VCP AAA+ ATPase in the context of cancer and therapeutics. RTs appreciated!
