Christchurch, which fronted Endell Street, lay upon the present day site of Dudley Court. It was consecrated in 1845 but demolished in 1930. Its spire was 129 feet high. This was struck twice by lightning in a great storm in 1877 and was so badly damaged it had to be rebuilt.

In 1741, Hogarth’s The Enraged Musician visually described the cacophony of sounds heard all over London. In Seven Dials, shop owners and dealers in second-hand clothes in Monmouth Street employed 'barkers' who stood outside the shops and noisily touted for buyers.
