But what we realized too late was that offshoring production would cut us out of the industry in the future. Andy Grove, the third CEO of Intel, knew this would be a huge problem locking us out “of tomorrow’s emerging industry.”

Place gold next to hydrocarbons under a 40 GPa anvil, then zapping it with X-rays until it reaches 2200K, and watch the formation of gold hydride next to microscopic diamonds: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/an… Superionic hydrogen even flowed through the gold lattice before separating.

Want to feel like an underachiever? Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine who was initially met with ridicule for his ideas, became the father of the jet engine. He patented the jet engine in 1930... At the age of 22. It's time for a Flashback Thread…

Akshually Italy is an export-oriented, high-tech manufacturing economy that even by economists' standards is larger than the UK's despite a smaller population. Italy is a major machine tool exporter. Tesla got its giga-presses from a boutique Italian firm outside of Milan.

I think we should build a giant linear skyscraper like Saudi Arabia’s line in the western part of sf to stop the fog from coming into the city

Over time, I realized in pretty much all cities in the world except SF, the rich want a stratified class system. The rich class interacts only with the rich, the employee class interacts only with the employee class, and the only class mingling there is is when the rich want to

“casino culture” sports betting, shitcoins, meme stocks, vibe coding 100m in six hours, etc are all expressions of the same deep cultural rot. if youth don’t believe there’s legitimate ways to get rich through work, all of culture will become a rotten sports book for the soul

Ignore what you read in the media - 3D printing companies are actually booming. At least 5 companies have grown from ~0 to >$200M in revenue in the last 10 years. You probably haven't heard about them because all but one are in China. Bambu Lab is now the largest company in 3D

Why don't we use large airships to transport giant wind turbine blades? Aiui wind turbines get more efficient as they get bigger, but we're at the size limit of what can be transported with trucks, but airships have no such limits. Eli Dourado

It’s time to get rid of frame rates. In weird corners of the internet, researchers and standards committees discuss frameless video containers. Sensor data as a continuous function, down-sampled to any frame rate you want. Here's what it'll look like in 10 years:
