In “The Last Hurrah,” the Irish mayor reveals plans for a new statue in Little Italy. He passes on proposals of Columbus, Garibaldi, even Rocky Marciano. He settles on Mother Cabrini: “Italian-born. First American saint. Let's see somebody fool around with that one.”
Statues of Columbus might be coming down, but in NYC, a monument to Mother Cabrini has gone up. The Italian-American saint worked for immigrants and the poor, starting hospitals, schools and orphanages. The statue has views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. WCBS 880
