Stu’s Football Flashbacks 2 England squads reached the semifinals of the World Cup since 1966. The experience of 1990 appears to have caught the imagination of football fans much than 2018. Why is that?

11. Since 1990 I have in person seen England lose another World Cup Semi Final in Moscow and the Euro 2020 Final and the Euro 2024 Final. The pain although really bad - was not as bad as in 1990.

Today marks 35 years since England lost in the semi-final of 1990 World Cup to West Germany on pens. From that night, this image has always stuck with me. German captain Lothar Matthaus consoling Chris Waddle, instead of celebrating with his teammates. A moment of pure class.

Dylan Kerr FIFA World Cup FIFA I truly fell in love watching the 1990 World Cup on telly but I had started watching Blackpool by that point. Most kids these days will only ever view football as a TV show as they and their families will be priced out of live games.

Even in a soccer mad country like Argentina, during the era of Diego Maradona, a little known, some would say "average" GK became a national hero. At Urban Pitch I looked back on the legend of Sergio Goycochea urbanpitch.com/looking-back-a…

4 July 1990. England drew 1-1 with West Germany but were beaten 4-3 on penalties in the World Cup Semi-Final in Turin, Italy. At the time, It was the furthest stage any England team had reached in any World Cup held outside England. It was equalled by the England team in 2018.

4 July 1990. Paul Gascoigne was booked during the World Cup Semi-Final against West Germany. He then broke into tears as he realised he would be excluded from the final if England got there. His emotional reaction made him a national hero.

Bayern & Germany It’s honestly hard to believe what kind of people are on that board. Objectively speaking, what’s stopping them from making an offer during the Club World Cup? We’re not living in 1990 anymore. Unbelievable.

Ahmed Fathy Amr Nageeb Fahmy This is a personal opinion, but the numbers & facts say Shikabala was on the squad that managed to lead Egypt to reach the world cup for first time since 1990, much more important than anything AbouTreika and AlKhatib achieved locally or regionally with Egypt, they both failed.

Amr Nageeb Fahmy We are talking numbers, not personal opinions about how important was the goal he scored against Ghana, simply Shikabala and his colleagues managed to let Egypt reach world cup qualifications for the first time since 1990, a feat that surpasses everything else, local & continental.

1990 was my first World Cup watching England. When I woke up in Moscow in 2018 before we played Croatia my feelings were the opposite to 1990. All those World Cup and Euros knock outs that you have witnessed in person make you more aware of the possibility of defeat and real pain

On this day in 1990: 35 years ago today. England footballer Paul Gascoigne's booking, (that would have excluded him from the World Cup Final in Italy, had England got there). The caution resulted in the famous on pitch crying scenes from Gascoigne. #OTD

Amr Nageeb Fahmy The last line is inaccurate! Shikabala’s record for Egypt included being successful to reach the second only world cup appearance since 1990, with Mo Salah,a feat not achieved by Ahly’s”legendary”captains Al Khatib and Abu Treika. Reaching world cup is the most important record.
