The District Judges for the Southern District of Texas have approved the appointment of Magistrate Judge Dena Palermo to another eight-year term, to begin on March 9, 2024.

U.S. District Judge Diana Saldaña and U.S. Magistrate Judge Diana Song Quiroga launched the Middle School Citizenship Academy in Laredo, Texas, this month. The program introduces students to the federal Judiciary and teaches the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship.

On February 6, Girl Scout Troop 147004 met with Judge Palermo to learn about the federal judiciary, the types of federal judges, and their duties. The Girl Scouts are working on their Gold Award, the equivalent of an Eagle Scout.

Due to the power outages caused by Hurricane Beryl, the Galveston Federal Courthouse will be closed until further notice. The court’s Electronic Case Filing (ECF) system is not affected by the closure, and parties may continue to file electronically.
