On this day in 1944, 150,000 Allied troops are loaded onto ships all across southern England. Tomorrow, they'll take part in history's greatest invasion. “At that time, we didn't know it was D-Day," one veteran would later recall. "We just knew we had a job to do.”

I have no words to describe how much respect I have for this man and the thousand of others who stood by his side. Some may have forgotten your bravery but I tell you now, I never will. A true hero 🇬🇧🇬🇧

90% of the soldiers on the first boats to hit the beach didn't live to see the end of the day. Look at those faces. Some of them never made it to 18. They paid the ultimate price for your freedom. You live your life the way you do because of them.

If any government in future is serious about the legacy of the WW2 generation, then a trip to the Normandy Beaches should be a mandated secondary school trip. It's a reminder of what sacrifice really is. We owe them that in perpetuity.
