IMO: Physiotherapy is first and foremost about strenghtening peoples own resources to self-manage. So don't despair if evidence doesn't hand us golden bullets to change the pain trajectory (e.g. back pain). Our competence isn't really in the modalities, it's in the humanities.

Range of motion is a psychobehavioural assessment. It isn't necessarily a measure of available range; it also is a measure of willingness to move. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.100… sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Only about 4% of MRI scans for acute low back pain show findings of probable clinical significance! Most see things that were there before you had back pain! pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17088193/

Placebo analgesic effects are most likely GREATER in clinical practice than in research trials, as patients are more likely to be positively primed and influenced by clinicians! link.springer.com/article/10.100…

I can’t believe a person with LBP can be sent for so many scans. Scans, drugs, needles, Surgery. No understanding - no self management tools. Disabled and distressed. So much wasted $$ and Wasted years. It Sickens me. We can and must do better to support people in pain.

I really value the Nature Reviews papers. For me they’ve been a good starting place for understanding different topics. That and wikipedia! This looks like a brilliant paper on theories of #consciousness in #nature reviews #neuroscience nature.com/articles/s4158…

Overtreatment is a global problem. Stemming from overdiagnosis and/or an inherent assumption that early intervention or intervention at all outperforms no treatment. slowboring.com/p/overtreatmen…

The fact that this expert consensus statement only expresses the opinion of a selected group of surgeons who apparently believe their personal experience prevails over the existing evidence is worrisome... arthroscopyjournal.org/article/S0749-…

We spend more time anticipating or remembering moments than actually experiencing them. Our brains are mostly anticipation and memory replay machines.

I believe we expect too much from words. Fundamentally, pain science refers to the scientific study of pain-related occurances at multiple levels of complexity. If pain is the focus and science is the process, what else would we call it? Happy to be wrong here..

I'm finally recruiting for my first studies of my PhD! If you're in sunny #Perth and would like to contribute to research into low back pain I'm looking for participants with and without low back pain. PS if you're based in Perth and want to share this around please do!

This is objectively and demonstrably incorrect. Every unnecessary procedure a patient undergoes for an incidental finding has risk. These sad stories, like a patient who is injured, or worse, from an unnecessary biopsy or procedure are referred to as VOMIT: victims of modern
