Political hack/wonk, urbanist, Chicago lawyer, and lover of South Louisiana and Houston sports. Very left-liberal, not a socialist. There's a difference.

If reports that Ghislaine Maxwell is now permitted to leave prison and do work release are true, it's extraordinary. Migrants here for decades are being rounded up and detained indefinitely while a convicted sexual predator and child trafficker is being given special privileges.

I remain surprised that this hasn’t been a bigger scandal. The Trump admin has been moving to drop multiple prosecutions against very serious MS-13 lieutenants and leaders to avoid having them testify about Trump ally Nayib Bukele’s prior connections to the gang.

I've got lots of thoughts about lots of folks pictured here but today, none of that matters: I am proud of this broad contingent of Illinois & Chicago Dems for putting their differences aside to present a full united front against the Federal Government's blatant overreach

I can't be the only former Republican who remembers this and finds it stunning. The thing is, it shows I was a liberal all along, I just moved from right-liberal to left-liberal.

Even after everything, I still can’t get over how a president makes BILLIONS on worthless crypto and gets rid of police for crypto fraud, but we’re all talking about mortgage fraud by people who earn government salaries in the low hundreds of thousands. I just can’t.

One of America’s largest Republican conferences is being headlined by a guy who openly thinks America should have sided with the Nazis in WW2.

The most infuriating thing about what's happening right now is that like 99% of it was entirely predictable either b/c Trump said it openly, it was in Project 2025 or leading Dems said it would happen but the media ignored all of it b/c they wanted Trump back in office.

Maybe who the president is, what his character is like, and what he wants to do with the guard actually... uh... matters? Like, say hypothetically, the president were a convicted felon who attempted a coup to stay in power and continuously threatens perceived enemies...

What is the end result of making national security hyperpartisan like this? If, God forbid, we were attacked and the president only tried to protect his voters, would these loons be happy with themselves?

I have a VERY expansive view of the commander in chief's power to order military force. Even I really struggle to see how this could be legal.

It shocks me that so many people here still think just locking more people up and for longer will magically solve crime. Looking at this, I'm pretty sure our crime problem, relative to our peers, isn't caused by a lack of incarceration.
