After trauma, we start believing stories about ourselves that aren’t true. I thought I was worthless. But I searched for something more—and I found it. You can too.

Two years of school at sea. I couldn’t have known it then, but that feeling of community I had with the crew members eventually became a cornerstone of my approach to helping people who struggle with substance use disorder.

In 1988, on school-at-sea program, Captain Wedlock would say, “Be careful going forward in these big swells!” And being kids, we’d think, “Whatever.” Until a massive wave would break on deck, washing our feet out from under us. Then we’d think, “OK, maybe he had a point there.”
