Climate change and all the flooding around the globe? The short answer is it’s only going to get worse if we don’t stop burning fossil fuels. Much worse if we don’t do it fast. washingtonpost.com/weather/2023/0…

Fish! Fish! Fish! Rearing those beautiful critters of the Southwest deserts, the Sonora Sucker. Here Taylor Saucier and Kaitlyn Gahl carefully aclimate the fish to their new home. Taylor is studying rearing and spawning techniques for these fish. It isn’t easy!!

Out for a New Year’s Eve peak bagging that turned into a scouting hike due to late start. I want to climb this, but a trail up not shown on map. However, I approached it & found a social trail marked w/ cairns apparently leading to summit. I’ll hopefully climb this week.

Teachers have been in our family for over 100 years. All public education. Grandpa was a school superintendent in rural West Virginia. He evaluated teachers in one-room schools. His evaluation book from 1912-1913. Once # of outhouses was used to help judge school quality.

Our students (& fish bios) sometimes do some intense paddling to collect fish data. Of course I recommend various DOI courses, Coast Guard, etc., but I’m also adding a lab in Fish Mgmt Class that teaches a few paddling & rowing skills - canoeing, inflatable, & Jon boat sculling.

Describing our upcoming book on standard methods to sample North American freshwater fishes at World Fisheries Congress in Seattle. We led symposium where scientists across the world could share info about standard sampling & enumerating fish populations. Saw many old friends!

Come along & read about stories that highlight various conservation projects Illinois Natural History Survey has contributed to aid in detecting rare species across dynamic landscapes. One the #INHSmollusk lab has participated in is " Kick-starting Conservation" Story - prairie.illinois.edu/features/kick-…

I met old friends for dinner at the World Fisheries Congress. See the price of King Crab on the menu. See the next pic. Think there might be a connection? Come on. Get serious. Support politicians that want to develop policies & technologies to fight greenhouse gas emissions.

UA students & staff examine fish w/ ultrasound machine. Visible eggs show fishes’ development w/out having to sacrifice it, especially important for brood stock or high conservation value fish. This fish a euthanized test subject. Otherwise much more water surrounding it!

A fish filled evening! Taking students in my fishery management class boat electrofishing! Largemouth bass, crappie, carp, catfish, fishing was good. Hertz, voltage, amps, duty cycle, water conductivity - need to know it all to catch fish! Good batch of students to work with!!

NOAA’s coral bleaching alert 2023-2024. As a citizen, I’m beyond tired of hearing buzz words like ā€œadaptationā€ & ā€œresilienceā€ thrown around by agencies managing climate change w/out accompanying ā€œreduce greenhouse gas emissions fast.ā€ In all communications in bold. Do better.
