Wild up here in a Murrayfield penthouse and a lucky escape for our neighbours to the east ... Eucalyptus trees don't have deep roots.

This usage of bield (shelter) not attributed to Burns in DSL, which cites his 'Winter of life' (1796). OED's earliest evidence for bield is from 1792, again in Burns (Country Lassie).

Opportunists are not true leaders because they 'lie reflexively, blame others for failures, and are unapologetic cowards'. Sebastian Junger, Freedom (2021), 106. Remind you of anyone?

Lovely image of a Pink-Footed Goose in the pond at Gosford House, Aberlady: one of a handful there who wintered in Britain and have yet to leave for their breeding grounds in Spitsbergen, Iceland and Greenland. Seemed untroubled by our presence.

Replacing the cane on the bentwood chair I used for school homework as a child was bewildering, stressful, and time consuming for Veena and I, but we got there in the end and the effort was well worthwhile. I wonder if we'll ever sit on it ...

Sheepdog demonstration in Highland Scotland with craggy master shepherd Neil Ross. You can engage directly with farming, sheep shearing, landscape (and puppies) on a Smithsonian Journeys vacation called 'Scotland's Treasures' here in bonny Scotland.

Mobbed by #gulls at bus stop today, remains of Italian convenience meal their target. Moved 3 steps out of reach and the mess someone (human) left was entirely cleaned up within 20 seconds. I conclude gulls perform a social service and should be thanked.

Interested in 18th century medicine? This invaluable new free resource contains a wealth of evidence about conditions and their treatment. 'Hypochondria' is one, a mainstream diagnosis of a serious psycho-somatic ailment rather than our imaginary disease. rcpe.ac.uk/peoplesdispens…

Delighted another repulsive abuser, one of many at EA in the 1960s and 1970s, is 'out'. The boys called him 'Jake Spray' because he used to stand at the entrance to the shower staring at their bodies after PE. Scandalous delay of justice. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

On Saturday I talked about the history of #tourism to the Edinburgh branch of SALTIRE SOCIETY. On the left my wife and on the right a Trustee. A lively and welcoming audience, members of a thoroughly worthwhile body promoting Scottish culture, past and present.
