A collage of the Middlesbrough clean up. Hope it fills you with as much positivity and love as it did for us there today 🙏

It was predictable that the “peaceful protest” in Middlesbrough yesterday would end in fear, violence and damage to property. Today, my morning started with clearing up broken glass along with volunteers who reflected Middlesbrough’s wonderful diversity. Today, I was proud.

We shouldn’t be reluctant to study homicide and mental illness. It’s an important, if difficult, topic. Equally, in doing so, we should be sensitive to stigma. How can research tread this line? A few examples. Short 🧵

"Social care contributes c.£60bn to the economy, more than agriculture & utilities..an industry in its own right. It's a partner to the NHS, deserving the parity of esteem. It's time for the government to “think social care first” across policy depts. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Outlining steps to support unpaid carers in a recent debate, it was good to hear the Minister reaffirming commitment to a national care service and to reviewing 'the implementation of carer’s leave and to examining all the benefits of introducing paid carer’s leave.'

We support Darzi’s focus & shift in funding from hospitals, to community & mental health services. But social care must be at the heart of a ‘neighbourhood NHS’, otherwise we’re at risk of failing to deliver this once in a generation opportunity to transform health & social care.

Older People in acute hospitals shouldn’t be “waiting for social care” Lord Darzi - they should be spending time in Intermediate Care - reducing longer term demands on both the NHS and Social Care!

Early care & support enables us to live independently at home for longer. The report shows we're a long way from this. For #careclosertohomecare the Government needs to invest in more community reablement, improve pay & conditions & commit to a funded plan for #adultsocialcare.

The problem in most Trusts is that they have insufficient capacity to meet the intermediate care needs of patients - this isn’t an “interface problem” but a system failure. hsj.cdn.wilmingtonplc.com/2024/10/02/rev…

Depressing, if unsurprising, that council CEOs see adult and children’s #socialcare as the most likely area for cuts next year, while sandwiched between them is the VCS, which provides much of the wellbeing support underpinning formal care. Report here: local.gov.uk/publications/c…

Unpaid carers provide vital care & support & shouldn’t have to worry about paying for essentials. Our care system is unsustainable without them. Currently, financial support for them isn’t working. Carer's Allowance must be improved & made more flexible for carers to work & care.
