Positive that Healthwatch's report shows social care works well for those who get it, but millions are missing out. We need a long-term fully funded plan to reform social care & enable people, whatever disability or illness they are facing, to live well, work and care.

Improved pay & conditions is key to developing a first-class social care workforce, so the fair pay agreement in #KingSpeech is a welcome first step. But given the significant financial challenges facing local councils & care providers, any pay agreement must be funded nationally

Along with yesterday's #KingsSpeech commitment on fair pay, this feels like we're on the cusp of finally taking action to properly value our care workforce for the amazing work they do. We look forward to working with the Government and other stakeholders to make it a reality.

A message of positivity this morning to counter the shameful scenes witnessed in Middlesbrough last night. Hundreds turned out to help clean up following the unacceptable disorder and criminality last night. Thank you to everyone who showed the real Middlesbrough.

It was predictable that the “peaceful protest” in Middlesbrough yesterday would end in fear, violence and damage to property. Today, my morning started with clearing up broken glass along with volunteers who reflected Middlesbrough’s wonderful diversity. Today, I was proud.

We shouldn’t be reluctant to study homicide and mental illness. It’s an important, if difficult, topic. Equally, in doing so, we should be sensitive to stigma. How can research tread this line? A few examples. Short 🧵

Outlining steps to support unpaid carers in a recent debate, it was good to hear the Minister reaffirming commitment to a national care service and to reviewing 'the implementation of carer’s leave and to examining all the benefits of introducing paid carer’s leave.'

We support Darzi’s focus & shift in funding from hospitals, to community & mental health services. But social care must be at the heart of a ‘neighbourhood NHS’, otherwise we’re at risk of failing to deliver this once in a generation opportunity to transform health & social care.

Older People in acute hospitals shouldn’t be “waiting for social care” Lord Darzi - they should be spending time in Intermediate Care - reducing longer term demands on both the NHS and Social Care!
