It was predictable that the “peaceful protest” in Middlesbrough yesterday would end in fear, violence and damage to property. Today, my morning started with clearing up broken glass along with volunteers who reflected Middlesbrough’s wonderful diversity. Today, I was proud.

We shouldn’t be reluctant to study homicide and mental illness. It’s an important, if difficult, topic. Equally, in doing so, we should be sensitive to stigma. How can research tread this line? A few examples. Short 🧵

We support Darzi’s focus & shift in funding from hospitals, to community & mental health services. But social care must be at the heart of a ‘neighbourhood NHS’, otherwise we’re at risk of failing to deliver this once in a generation opportunity to transform health & social care.

Unpaid carers provide vital care & support & shouldn’t have to worry about paying for essentials. Our care system is unsustainable without them. Currently, financial support for them isn’t working. Carer's Allowance must be improved & made more flexible for carers to work & care.
