Today is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples and the start of the Global Indigenous Youth Summit on Climate Change UNITAR. We will feature some of the key voices from the event to share why indigenous youth participation is key to addressing climate change.

The GIYSCC provides a wonderful opportunity to bring original and grassroots voices to the table on climate change negotiation and any other initiatives on climate change. It empowers global Indigenous Youth, offering fresh and inclusive insights into other climate initiatives.

These rights to traditional lands and natural resources are increasingly threatened by extractive policies that marginalize them, a situation exacerbated by the impacts of climate change. It is meaningful and promising to initiate a dialogue among indigenous African youth. 1/2

These young people have the potential to become future leaders in their communities and play a vital role in raising awareness of the challenges indigenous people face. By fostering alliances greater attention can be paid to the plight of indigenous communities in Africa. 2/2

To me, these two proverbs are a call for collective action and the need for all of us to be intentional about taking climate action. The GIYSCC will directly contribute towards building knowledge and capacity to meet climate change - one of the outcome targets for UN #SDG13.

The emerging global partnership of Indigenous Youth Leaders is in the spirit of #SDG17: Partnerships for the Sustainable Development Goals. We aim to address climate change as one of the biggest challenges for humankind. In this sense, we are all Indigenous on Earth inclusively.
