Here is a question to ask of teachers engaged in the PLC process: “Describe an instructional strategy you now use because a colleague got better results on a common formative assessment.” P-rofessionals should be able to list several ways they are L-earning in C-ommunity.

No system of interventions can make up for teaching students below grade-level in their core instruction. Additional time and support must be provided in addition to—and not in place of—access to new grade-level essential curriculum.

My experience is that most schools and district do not struggle becoming a PLC because they do not understand what to do.  More often, they struggle due to ineffective leadership and faculty resistance to the discomfort created by change.

A lesson I learned from my parents, who worked in the service industry, also applies to education. The higher you go up in any organization, the more people you serve, not the other way around. More in #WhatMakesAGreatPrincipal buff.ly/3ynLtbq

I am thankful for the privilege of Mr. Hickert's friendship and the opportunity to work with him at HMS. I am crushed by his passing.
