Bees can bee playful! Bees can learn from one another. Bees sleep and likely dream... of flowers? Bees are thinking, feeling creatures, akin to us. šŸ’›šŸāœØ

Coming soon… the solar farm formerly known as the state of Nevada When folks say solar dev has to be done ā€œthe right way, in collaboration with the local communityā€ā€¦ never seems to mean in collaboration w/ local creatures and plants who’ve made their homes here for generations

Look! Wasp jam! Don’t let the #wasps down this season. They are craving sugar as their nests die down! Invite them to the party with a little dish of jam! It keeps them away from your picnics & parties. Wasps are important pollinators & keep our gardens clear of ā€˜pests’. #waspjam

ā€œPlants smothered by pollutants were visited byĀ up to 70% fewer insects overall, and their flowers received 90% fewer visitsĀ compared with those in unpolluted plots. The concentrations of pollutants were well below what US regulators consider safe.ā€

To think we can replace pollination—a process bees have honed over at least 120 million years—with technology (w/assoc emissions, mining, plastics, etc.)... and call it a "solution"?! Let's call it what it is, astonishing hubris destroying the web of life. treefruit.wsu.edu/article/roboti…

ā€œIf you don’t leave us free to cover the earth with new toxins (as we are with PFAS), GDP might suffer!ā€ Let it suffer.

Imagine if roboticists created self-powered, maintenance-free, biodegradable, self-replicating pollinators that evolved with changing conditions over time... oh right, bees do all those things already!

What's the end game... a toxic environment, but at least profits kept rising before it all collapsed? I despair each time I learn more of Dupont/3M's cover-up of their own science. They've always been aware of severe harms of PFAS, yet continue to sell in *16K current products*

So scientists have figured out how to give ā€œmanagedā€ bumble bees a cocktail to help them survive our pesticide apocalypse. Meanwhile, the rest of the insect kingdom is left to fend for itself. Anything to avoid looking at the hard problem of an ever-more contaminated biosphere.

What part of the United States has the greatest diversity of native bee species? The desert Southwest. The areas that urban East-Coasters dismiss as wastelands, because they are ecologically clueless. e360.yale.edu/digest/scienti…

There’s something delightful about seeing bees being bees. At the heart of this teeming ball of bees is a female ivy bee. Her scent must be dazzlingly attractive, as every other bee in this video is male! One of ~21K species of bees that aren’t honey bees.

ā€œIf a creature, such as a honeybee, is alive 48 hours after exposure, then it is deemed that all is well, and the chemical may be approved for use. The bee may be unable to fly or navigate, or its immune system may no longer function, but that is not recorded.ā€ — Dave Goulson

If the other place remains ā€œa left-leaning silo,ā€ then that is indeed a problem. It doesn’t have to stay that way. There are major disadvantages to playing on the highly tilted field here, where The Oligarch puts his thumb on the scale and wields his algorithm like a weapon.

When there’s so little that anyone can do on a larger scale, these small acts of kindness towards our fellow inhabitants of the planet are all that matter. Someone came along at an opportune moment to care for this tiny individual's plight. savebees.org/thoughts/wingl…
