CS vs RelionCor/CtfFind4 on the same 100 movies. Tried pretty much every setting in RelionCor/CtfFind4 but cannot get the CTF to be estimated well. The movies look good by eye and Thon rings are visible. Any ideas what to try if I was commited to use Relion/CTFfind?

New preprint out from the MonteRosa gang on computational approaches to mine the CRBN target space. Revealed new neosubstrates recognition modes including helical motifs and molecular surface mimicry. Lots to still learn about redirecting CRBN! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Yesterday a Nobel prize was given for alpha fold. Alpha fold could not exist without the Protein Data Bank (PDB), a public database funded by US taxpayers. Every structural biologist in the world that deposited their structure to the PDB indirectly helped train alpha fold.

Glad to see this online in PNASNews (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39352935/). I started this project many moons ago at Caltech. While trying to dissect the Legionella Type 4 Secretion System (T4SS), I found deletion of two T4SS components (dotI/dotJ) abrogates ATPase recruitment.

Vogel lab (WashU) had similar conclusions from their biochemical analysis. We decided to dig deep! Sukhi spent nearly 3 years doing meticulous biochemical and genetic analysis to show that DotJ, DotI, and IcmT are receptors for the T4SS’ unique 3-component ATPase complex.

APEX peroxidase is a versatile tool for proximity labeling and electron microscopy (EM) but its requirement for toxic H2O2 is a liability. We now report LaccID, a multicopper oxidase evolved from an ancestral fungal laccase that oxidizes aromatic substrates using non-toxic O2
