Every year I read a lot of grad school applications from accomplished people that don't give me the info I'm looking for. It feels like a major hidden curriculum thing. So here's (my opinion on) how to write a great Statement of Purpose/Research for a PhD program. 🧵 1/

🗣️Attention literally all science twitter Have thoughts on the postdoc experience? Ideas on how to re-envision it? The NIH is seeking input from YOU. Please respond and share widely. Don't assume what you have to say is known, write it down & help us advocate for policy change.

An app can stand out for many diff reasons, eg. helping to start a new lab (no papers, new lab), leading diversity and equity initiatives, seeking out REUs/summer research if not at an R01, supporting yourself/family financially, etc...don't not apply if you don't have papers.

IMO, pubs before grad school reflect luck/timing of a project, a PI's generosity and mentorship, and *could* reflect research capacity. But the first two are absolutely necessary for a pre-grad school paper
