Another small thread for your Saturday pondering. When I talk about a near frenetic desire to create right angles from the ancient cultures in & near Peru its not hyperbolic. The expression of the surfaced right angle is repeated over and over. If this was just mining activities

1/3 🧵A rambling thread. These ancient places I feature were once people's homes & gathering places. Its sometimes easy to overlook that aspect. People all experienced worries, joys, fears, dreams, sorrow & the mundane in these places.

Lets end the week with another #FourQuestionFriday and puzzle over the 'Master of Animals' or the 'Snake Witch' or whatever name. I'm told these are just coincidences and nothing more, even though there are many other examples than these. Dates are for reference only.

1/3 🧵 Another thread on Sulawesi starting with Palindo the largest statue that is said to represent the first settler in the region. A king wanted the statue moved south but it proved too large to move. The statue was turned from facing south to west as an insult to the king.

1/5 🧵Many cultures seemed drawn to mazes or 'labyrinths'. Perhaps these places were actually for ritual meditative practice. To walk the path and contemplate mortality or the afterlife. Lets start with Bolshoi Zayatsky in Russia, a tundra like island.

The stone shapes aren't an afterthought. They're the thought. They align to the Sun and the Moon and the Stars. They tell stories that were old when first spoken, but now long forgotten. I think of these things often and wonder.... A small sampling of menhirs from Brittany.

1/2 🧵The Loughcrew megalithic monuments (Slieve na Calliagh) in Ireland are a collection of 32 cairns & menhirs. Two of these cairns (Cairn T & Cairn L) are highly adorned with carvings of spirals, circles & cupules. One carving in Cairn L may depict an eclipse around 3340BC.
