🗣️ More research is not needed; action is needed. Action to reduce poverty can be taken almost immediately.

Outraged that such a high-profile case could have been messed up in this way. Can't imagine what the victims must be feeling right now, and appalled that they could be forced to relive their traumas again on the witness stand

🗣️ Almost two thirds of people in destitution live with a chronic health condition or disability. Cutting people’s eligibility for benefits won't help.

The PM's speech was an irresponsible war of words on people who already aren’t getting enough support.

Wow, they turned my 293 page book into a 7 minute video! This is a really compelling telling of how the phone-based childhood replaced the play-based childhood, and what we must do now. Thanks Kite & Key Media!

Reposting this as it’s got surprisingly little attention. The increase in numbers going cold and hungry is really very big.

This is “proper” data making proper comparisons across time.

Can't get over that there's been a *68%* increase *in one year* in the number of people who don't have enough food to *3.7 million* people and it's not anywhere near the biggest news story.

🗣️ The annual poverty figures published today confirm that the Government failed to protect the most vulnerable from the cost of living crisis. Absolute poverty, their preferred measurement, has risen for the 2nd year in a row.

💥 This rise is as big as we've seen for 40 years.

The is a budget for big earners and big owners.

Instead of real support for those in hardship, we saw a short-term patching up of the government's own failed systems.

Government is all about choices. With 1 million children facing destitution and the NHS on its knees, the Government has chosen….

A tax cut which primarily gives money to high and middle income earners.

In 2022/23 both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer worked hard, earned a lot of money and paid tax on it. But they both received far more money in the form of capital gains, and paid a much lower rate of tax on that. Our tax system rewards wealth ownership more than hard work.

'The nature and extent of poverty in the UK in 2024 should shame those who ignore it – not those who are suffering it.' 👏

We can't ignore rising poverty levels in our society. 📈

Universal Credit should, at a minimum, guarantee

🗣️ 'When it comes to British domestic politics, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - that matters as much as this,' says Andrew Marr on LBC.

We agree.

💼 It's time for our politicians to provide answers on how they will address .

“I’m really worried about the state of poverty in Britain at the moment, and I really want people to focus on it. You don’t hear any Government Minister ever talking about poverty… and it’s their duty to do something about it”. Gordon Brown 👏

Great to hear Mel Stride arguing that shoring up basic economic security supports people to move into & stay in work.

We all need a firm foundation to build from and that’s what social security is for.

We need to apply that logic to the basic rate of UC too, which is just £85pw
