A friend from Pakistan currently studying in Germany sends me pages from the Collected Poems by Jack Gilbert, from the library, often daily; I’d nudged her to read him last year, said he kept me from killing myself, post pandemic, when I’d locked myself in a room for 5 months.

Ali Khan Mahmudabad—an important, gifted author I’ve represented for years and a good friend—is one of the most erudite, decent, and respectful people I know. He’s being put through hell. I just hope he’s safe, out of harm’s way, and released soon. Fingers crossed!
