Thanks to COVID, our AGM is now Friday 4 - Sunday 6 Sep. Take a road trip to UWA Albany where we'll start late Friday afternoon 4 Sep and finish around noon Sunday 6 Sep. There'll be a strong focus on students/ECRs, plenty of fun social stuff + a talks by a couple luminaries!

Appreciative of how my supervisor takes pride in making sure his lab members get social media exposure for the work we do. Took some high-res images with a DSLR camera today. Might use these images for the next 20 years. Asians don’t age anyway 😎

Pieces falling into place to apply for my 1st postdoc position! My foray into directed evolution of proteins 4 yrs ago (pre-PhD) now out tinyurl.com/y3qf9p8z. PhD work on structures of a protein that undergoes circular permutation AND enzyme that performs this now in preprint.

My supervisor's too efficient with social media. He got the first tweet in on my first 1st-author paper. Interested in protein ligases/transpeptidases? This review's a good starting point to look at how well we understand the structure of the fastest ones. tinyurl.com/wvr4z5s

PhinisheD! Handed in my PhD thesis today! Was presented with a mug - may just be the only truly tangible reward for all that effort. A nice little thing to remind myself that I may be stupid, but not completely so.

Thanks, The Plant Cell for recognising and promoting the people behind the work that you publish. I think that’s pretty cool! Will tweet the final version of this paper when it’s out! plantae.org/samuel-nonis-t…

An assistant features editor at The Plant Cell Brendan O'Leary has summarised a research that I led better than I could! Mind was blown when I read it. Would love to be this good at science communication one day. The Plant Cell

conA: -Discovered 1919 -Among early proteins solved by X-ray crystallography (1972) -Maturation process involving circular permutation discovered in 1985 and still the only type known to do so. The precursor was assumed uninteresting all this while, but here we learn otherwise!

Thankful my PhD supervisor Joshua Mylne gave me the freedom to explore conA circular permutation even though it’s outside of his area of expertise. ConA has a long history and is a common reagent, so this work is getting noticed, especially by experienced scientists! mary williams
