What has been the key driver for change over the last 2 decades? I’d argue mostly it’s been patients & families who have pushed for change following tragic events - often at huge personal cost and against a system that hasn’t wanted to listen.

Who are the people…

“lack of repeated observations… lack of senior review, leading to lack of recognition of the seriousness of her condition…”

'Had intravenous fluids and antibiotics been provided in the morning, she would on balance have survived.”

Why matters: 🧵

In September 2023, at one week old, our little baby boy presented with a high temperature but otherwise seemed well. We attended a local ED with the expectation that he’d receive a lumbar puncture and blood cultures.

Sepsis carries a 5 times higher mortality than acute myocardial infarction & stroke.
Treat all patients presenting unwell with infection with a high index of suspicion for SEPSIS especially those who are immunocompromised, the very young, old & pregnant.

For grievers, New Year can hit harder than Christmas.

The calendar pushing us farther in time from those we love.

Farther from seeing them, from hearing their voice.

The new date means they died ‘last year’ / 2 yrs / 10 yrs ago etc.

Breaks your heart a little bit more.💔

This is a national Sepsis research project for which I an on the steering committee. If you have contacts working in ICUs, please flag it to them; they are looking to recruit as many hospitals as possible to be involved.

“Goodnight sweetheart I love you”. The last words I would ever say to my son alive.

I went to bed that evening having been told William had a virus. I didn’t know he was dying.

I would do ANYTHING to turn back the clock. To not listen to them. To put him to bed 1 more time.

V. nearly didn’t phone GP today to ask about Ollie’s nasty cough. “There’s a lot of it around”. He seemed mostly ok in himself. Didn’t expect an appointment or that he would need strong antibiotics for a chest infection, inhaler, steroids..
Scary that I didn’t recognise it.
